Light. Darkness. Sound. Silence. One can only exist with the absence of the other. Sensory deprivation in the middle of a chaotic site in New York City.
The architecture employs water and concrete as the delivering materials for light, darkness, sound, and silence to travel. Water level dictates the ratios of senses as it distorts them: from a bathhouse to a diving center in the control of one factor.
When flooded, Sentium becomes a tranquil, immersive space where water softens its angular design. Light filters through the surface while acoustics shift to a calm, echoing ambiance.

"The experiential core was represented with film."
Utilizing the four main elements: water, light, sound, and silence. The film captured what drawings alone could not. Sound was as crucial as the visuals. Engulfed in the film, the viewer experiences the architecture before ever entering it.
Each frame of the contact sheet corresponds to a sensory threshold: the moment light meets water, silence overtakes sound, or darkness consumes the space entirely.
Sentium provides a variety of experiences within the same space, controlled by water level. It can go from a bathhouse to a diving center just in control of that factor. Truly programless architecture pushing the boundaries of what a venue can mean, under which circumstances.
A tattoo studio exploring concealment and revelation, where the architecture becomes the skin.
Irezumi, translating to "inserting ink," is a Japanese style tattoo whose use started in the Edo period for branding criminals. Over time Yakuza gangs embraced tattoos as a rite of passage. This project embodies the essence of Irezumi, challenging societal norms and gaining appreciation for tattoos as art beyond cultural boundaries. Much like tattooed individuals concealing their art, the architecture weaves itself in Japanese-inspired design, exposing what Japanese society attempts to conceal.
This diagram analyzes the Kanji stroke order, mirroring the deliberate process of Irezumi tattoo artistry. The forms in the design flow with the same precision and rhythm as traditional tattoo strokes. Tattoo members can hide their full body tattoos, concealing their identity to avoid societal judgment and maintain a sense of normalcy in public spaces.
The iterative process refined the design, exploring various forms and ideas before arriving at the final solution. Analyzing the experimental and spatial qualities of the pathways, the Irezumi form emerges embedded within the city, glowing as the architecture occupies what was once concealed.
Exposing their true selves while interacting in a space of acceptance. The use of colors represents occupying Irezumi. Light and darkness reveals or conceals their truth to Japanese society.
The pathways weave within each other, emphasizing human interaction at these junctions. Allowing individuals to engage and move seamlessly through the space, reflecting the fluidity and unity of human relationships within the environment.
"Exposed parallel to light. Concealed when perpendicular."
The positioning of a tattooed individual influences the visibility of their true identity to the public. Depending on the viewer's position: parallel to the light reveals, perpendicular conceals.
The model making process started with transferring the tattoo print onto bristol paper, then used a Grasshopper script to laser-cut the design, triangulating the curved forms. The final assembly brought the intricate pattern together on a CNC-machined foam base. The tattoo's essence transformed into a tangible architectural model.
